Coronado General Info

Although Coronado measures only 13.5 square miles, this enchanted “island” has it all—beaches, parks, world-class resorts, highly-rated schools, a fabulous climate and an ideal location. Coronado is a mere two-mile drive from the hustle and bustle of downtown San Diego via the majestic blue bridge, but it’s truly a world away.  Bathed in endless sunshine and surrounded by the San Diego Bay and the Pacific Ocean, this vibrant beach community is loaded with charm. Coronado is known by visitors and its 26,000 residents as one of the most beautiful and unique beachfront communities in the world.

Coronado is frequently referred to as an island, but it’s really a peninsula. It connects to San Diego by the celebrated San Diego-Coronado Bridge, and to Imperial Beach to the south by State Highway 75. Check out our helpful map to learn more.

With its charming main street, Orange Avenue, Coronado is the quintessential beach town, epitomizing village living. Mom-and-pop shops mix with stylish boutiques, and first-class restaurants mingle with family-owned ice cream parlors. Explore Coronado’s friendly neighborhoods with quiet tree-lined streets and you’ll discover an eclectic mix of architectural styles from well-preserved Victorian homes to charming Spanish villas to cozy beach cottages.

Coronado’s Top-Rated Beaches

Coronado beach, known for its expansive sandy shore, is consistently rated among the world’s top ten beaches. Dog beach, located at the west end of the beach, allows pet owners to bring their furry friends along for a fun day in the sun.

The World-Famous Hotel Del Coronado

The renowned Hotel Del Coronado holds court at the south end of the city. The Del, as it is lovingly known, is a National Historic Landmark dating back to 1888. Hotel visitors include some of the world’s icons, such as Marilyn Monroe and Frank Sinatra. In addition, every sitting President since Lyndon Johnson has been a guest. With its distinctive red turrets and glamorous aura, the Hotel continues to attract tourists from around the world.
